Fiance pushes woman to death for dowry in Delhi

New Delhi, April 29 : A young woman was allegedly pushed to death from a five-storied building by her fiancé Sunday - a day ahead of their marriage - after she refused to give him the dowry money, police said. Mukta Singh, 24, was allegedly pushed to death by Deepak Bhal from her Rangarpura Society building in Karol Bagh in central Delhi. Bhal, who also lives in the same area, took her to the top of the building where they had a heated altercation on the dowry issue. The man allegedly demanded Rs.400,000 and gold, police said. According to police, the duo had an affair for nine years and wanted to get married against their parents' wishes. They even ran away to Haridwar in Uttarakhand last week. Both families later agreed to their plans and the marriage was fixed for April 30.

"It's a bizarre case that she was allegedly pushed from the fifth floor by her fiance for dowry, after having an affair of nine years," Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said. "We have arrested Deepak and his father Rajkumar under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigations are underway," he added.

Women Found Dead

Wednesday April 4, 03:03 AM On Monday morning Preeti Kambarkar (22), married to Ashok Kambarkar for two years now, was discovered lying dead on the floor of her bedroom by her husband who claimed she consumed poison. But, what initially appeared to be a case of suicide due to dowry-related torture by her husband, has now turned into a murder case. Surat police says, Preeti was starved by her husband for four days after which he strangled her to death.

According to her elder brother Bhavesh, her husband kept Preeti hungry for four days at her in-laws house. The reason being she did not bring enough cash from her parents' home. Her husband Ashok has been arrested by Varachha police on charges of murder. Preeti (22), a resident of Matawadi in Varachha, came to Surat from her native place of Dhulia in Maharashtra some three years back. She met Ashok Kambarkar (28), residing in same area during the Navratri festival and soon their friendship blossomed into a romance. Preeti went against her parent's decision and eloped with Ashok. Preeti's mother Lata Patole said, "Ashok soon changed his behaviour and started harassing her physically and mentally. He always forced her to get more from our place."

"Last week he sent her again to bring money. But when she returned empty handed, Ashok made her go hungry for four days ," said Bhavesh. Lata lodged a police complaint stating that Ashok regularly tortured and kept Preeti hungry for days. This had forced Preeti to commit suicide. However, a post-mortem report revealed she was strangled to death.

Varachha police inspector J A Jadeja, who revised the complaint into a murder incident said, " We have arrested Ashok from his house on Monday afternoon. The autopsy report stated that she was strangulated. We suspect that a quarrel might have taken place between the couple, following which, Ashok might have strangulated her. Till now he has not confessed to his crime. Our investigations are still on."
